Chapter Eight

She didn’t let him stay. She couldn’t. If he’d stayed and they’d made love she wasn’t sure she would have had the strength to refuse his marriage proposal. He’d use sex to confuse and manipulate her, even if that wasn’t his intention. She was like putty in his arms. One kiss, one touch and being with him was all she could think about.

Idiot...

Mary-Jayne garnered all her strength and sent him packing. And tried to convince herself she couldn’t care less where he went. There were plenty of quality hotels in the nearby town of Bellandale. It was barely a twenty-minute drive from Crystal Point. He had a GPS. He’d be fine. She didn’t feel bad at all.

She had a shower, made soup and toast and curled up on the sofa to watch TV with Pricilla and pretended she’d put Daniel out of her mind once and for all.

Her dreams, however, were something else altogether. He invaded them. She couldn’t keep him out. His touch was like a brand against her skin, and she could still feel the heat of his body pressed against her for hours later. And his kiss... It was like no other. She remembered his comment about her ex-boyfriend. An unemployed musician? Toby had been exactly that. He wasn’t even much of a musician. They’d dated off and on for two years and she often wondered if she’d brought home a tattooed, frequently pierced, dreadlocked boyfriend simply because that was what everyone expected of her. Her teenage willfulness made her rebel against what she’d considered the average or mundane. After she’d left home she’d saved her money and quickly headed overseas. She’d returned feeling even more independent and more determined to live her own life.

And Toby was the end result. A deadbeat, she realized now. Someone who took advantage of her generous nature and swindled her out of her money and her pride. She’d been left with a debt for a car he crashed and a guitar he’d taken with him when he walked out the door. He had no goals, no ambition and no integrity. She’d had one serious relationship since with a man who ended up complaining about her spending too much time worrying about her career. He’d had no ambition, either—except the desire to sit in front of his computer all day playing games. She’d foolishly believed she chose men who were free-spirited and artistic. Now they simply seemed lazy and immature.

She tossed and turned all night and woke up feeling nauseated and unable to stomach the dry crackers and green tea that usually helped most when morning sickness came upon her.

She changed into her favorite overalls and grinned when she discovered she had to leave two of the three side buttons undone to accommodate her rapidly expanding middle. Her workshop needed a cleanup before she got to work on the few back orders she had, so she headed outside and began decluttering the counters. It was midmorning before she took a break and snacked on some apple slices and a cup of tea.
